Issue with CoreFTP Lite
« on: February 09, 2010, 11:13:29 am »
Hello,

I am using ProFTPD SFTP module, and it works great with multiple clients. How ever I have a strange behavior with "CoreFTP Lite", It is possible to mark "use Putty compatible SFTP" in the CoreFTP Lite, and then SFTP session works OK, how ever if I don't mark this setting, I cannot connect.

In the ProFTPD logs I don't see any errors, so this might be an issue with the CoreFTP, how ever I thought that this issue might have been encountered in the past, and maybe some light can be shed on this.

TX!
Hagai

I am attaching output I get from the CoreFTP on success & failure:

I don't know what CoreFTP Lite is doing if you don't mark the "use Putty compatible SFTP", but it appears to not be the standard SFTP protocol.  Thus as far as I can tell, this is just an issue with that client.

*Sigh*.  CoreFTP's documentation is absolutely horrible.

From perusing their forums -- and speculating a bit here -- I think that when CoreFTP says "SFTP", they *actually* mean FTPS (i.e. FTP over SSL).  And then when you check "use Putty compatible SFTP", it makes the client use SFTP (an SSH-based protocol) rather than FTPS (an SSL-based protocol).

After a little more reading, I think I was wrong.  CoreFTP's "SFTP", by default, is FTP over SSH (not SFTP, and not FTPS).  Weird.

In any case, mod_sftp speaks SFTP, not FTP over SSH and not FTPS.  Thus using CoreFTP's "use Putty compatible SFTP" is a requirement if using that client.
