FTP not working externally

Ok this is my first time setting up an FTP server with ProFTPd and from what i have done before this is a great server. The only problem i am facing is that when some one connects to the ftp server using my external IP they can log in but cannot see or do anything to any of the files. They just get
500 Illegal PORT command
ftp: bind: Address already in use

I can use the ftp from my LAN and it works flawlessly and very fast also but when connecting outside my LAN i get the error above when using PORT commands. So essential my server is useless as it stands. Any help would be highly appreciated. I have posted this on the Ubuntu forums but no-one has any ideas.
